John Gitonga Mukunji grew up in Rugumu village, Embu. His father drove the school bus at St. Ursula, and the family had little. He put everything into his books.
At the University of Nairobi, studying Industrial Chemistry, he could not find an internship. Instead of waiting for a job, he took a KSh 25,000 HELB loan and started a company recovering waste batteries and supplying cheaper backup power to institutions.
He first ran for Manyatta in 2017, joined late, and still drew about 10,000 votes. He spent the next five years on community projects, and in 2022 he won the seat.
